Volunteering Trip – Day 4

Oct 4, 2019

Still tired from the day before full of emotions, but ready for other colorful clouds of smiling children, we head by minibus towards Unguja. We are welcomed by many choruses of songs in Swahili, many “Jumbo!”, many enormous eyes, many shirts and veils of intense aquamarine green, the same color as the sea of Zanzibar. We are welcomed by many children proud to show us how they have learned the numbers. We played, we ran, we sang at the top of our lungs “O sole mio” with the children. As the days go by, nursery after nursery, “Asante” after “Asante”, I realize that my idea of Africa, of volunteering, of education is being overturned; new points of view are being formed, shaped by very strong emotions that can only be felt by touching the reality of the place, extremely far from our cities, our culture and our way of thinking. I realize that happiness can simply be a white beach, a deflated ball and many children running, who hold out their hands after falling on the sand, many children who live in the moment, nurturing their dreams.
