Volunteering Trip – Day 1

Oct 1, 2019

Breakfast is on the table, fresh fruit and eggs are on the plates and the volunteers are getting ready to get to work. Today we go to the kindergarten of Mwendawima and Chibuteni to bring biscuits and little books. The volunteers, in the past months, have been busy creating a very small educational book to help the teachers during English lessons, an essential language on the island. We all get into the usual van and off we go. In the kindergartens we are always welcomed by ahugs and smiles. Some meet for the first time, some see each other again after many months. Old and new bonds are created and recreated, always bringing the same emotions. The break from lessons is coordinated by our volunteers who have organized group games that, despite the language difficulties, entertain the children and teachers. The classrooms empty, the students have already put their shoes and backpacks back on, and in a group they head home, holding their little book in their hands with a triumphant air. The volunteers go away with them and some don't mind a four-kilometer walk home on the beach. The blue of the ocean is so beautiful that the tiredness disappears when you see it blend perfectly with the sky. The school gate is now closed, tomorrow they will reopen and the volunteers are already ready to cross new ones.
