In 2009 we were faced with a rather onerous maintenance estimate for the various nurseries that had gone into "regime". From the visits carried out we verified:
-Kibuteni kindergarten 60 children 4 teachers 1 cook
-Kikadini kindergarten 115 children 4 “” 1 “”
-Unguja Ukuu nursery school 70 children 4 “” 1 “”
Charawe Kindergarten 60 children 4 “” 1 “”
Mwendawima Nursery School 60 children 4 “” 1 “”
We were also asked by the village chief of Uzi Ngambwa about the possibility of an intervention aimed at the renovation of an old building to be transformed into a structure that could house a small nursery.
We thought of postponing this request to a better time but reaching this village was and always will be a stressful but beautiful journey for the uncontaminated places that we were forced to cross where the phenomenon of high and low tide forced us to have time limits to reach and return through a very difficult to travel road of over 4 km flanked by an interminable high mangrove espalier and at the end of this other kilometers crossing a forest with tall centuries-old trees.
Faced with these natural obstacles, we cannot postpone any longer the satisfaction of this request which would have allowed the children of that village to emerge from this isolation. A dear friend came to meet us and the new nursery, the fourth, became a reality and was inaugurated in the first ten days of March.
Ci aspettava un regalo inconsueto ed imprevisto ma che ci dava il senso di come i nostri impegni venissero graditiThe teachers at the Ungugja kindergarten had organized a party where the children offered us gifts and songs, even in Italian.
A party that made us think a lot, seeing the children having fun, we thought about organizing a sort of "youth games" where all the children and teachers from the various villages would participate, the date planned to give everyone the opportunity to organize themselves and ... train ... October 2019.
In the meantime we were busy with the realization of a large project in the village of Makunduki-Sogeani where there was a small building used as a kindergarten completely insufficient for the needs verified there were in fact over 150 children who wanted to attend school. The project, the largest of all, included a new building with three classrooms and the subsequent demolition of the existing building to then rebuild it with another two classrooms and a room for the teachers.
A huge financial commitment that we could face taking into account two elements: first, that the Government would provide support for the teachers by paying their salaries, second, we had received assurance from one of our supporters that we could cover more than half of the expenses that we would have had to face.
The inauguration of the new kindergarten would have taken place in October 2019 in conjunction with the youth games.
