Dear friends
A little update from Zanzibar.
To date, there have been about ten cases in the capital, some involving foreigners and others affecting inhabitants of the island.
The airspace was immediately closed, no one was allowed to enter or leave Zanzibar, all reservations were cancelled and all resorts large or small were closed.
The management of the infection is not clear, the Ministry of Health does not release bulletins, perceptions can be wrong both positively and negatively and we are in the Ramadan period.
Our friend JUMA tells us that everyone's concern is considerable…
The same rules as our European governments are being applied such as:
- wash your hands… but in the villages not everyone has water
- use antiseptic soap… but it's not easy to find
- use masks… but they are almost always unobtainable and the current cost is around €2 each.
- stay at home… but in the villages there aren’t always “houses”.
- respecting distances… and to those who have been in the villages of Zanzibar this seems an impossible argument, having had the opportunity to understand the mentality of how the life of the inhabitants has always been lived.
we are also told by JUMA that any infection is not treated as we do.
The greatest concern of all residents comes from the fact that the hospitals have no equipment and cannot admit anyone.
The patient must pay for quarantine and purchase any medicines or other supplies at his own expense, if possible…
We pressured JUMA to move away from his home which is on the outskirts of the capital, temporarily moving with his wife and children to some distant village or near Jambiani and to encourage him with the occasion the board thought of meeting any emergency situations by sending a contribution to be used for the purchase of masks, soap or other useful to protect against possible infections.
We hope that this nightmare for all of us will end soon, that Juma will be restored to serenity and that we will be allowed to resume our programs as soon as possible and above all return to be with the children.
See you soon and certainly to better times by continuing to follow us.
The Board of Directors.
